Fifth edition has no rule for critical fumbles, for failing a save badly, or for a natural 20 on a skill check — a 1 misses, and a 20 is just a 20. The first sets below are the optional tables for DMs who want those moments to be worth describing.

The rest are for the other moment every DM knows: the party has gone somewhere you didn't plan. A street with something happening in it, a tavern with a name and a rumour, names for whoever is behind the counter, and the days on the road between one place and the next.

The last two sets are for the small things: a wild magic surge, a potion with a side effect, a sword with opinions, and whatever turns up in a pocket when the party searches a guard, a noble or a cultist.
