Natural 20 Table — Deception Skill Checks, d20

A free d20 table for a natural 20 on a Deception check in 5e. Twenty outcomes, from solid to legendary.

A natural 20 on a skill check is not a critical success in fifth edition — criticals apply to attack rolls only, and a 20 on a check is simply a 20. Which is why a legendary roll so often feels like nothing happened. This table gives it somewhere to land.

Twenty results written for Deception specifically. A legendary Deception roll has nothing in common with a legendary roll at anything else, which is why there are eighteen of these and not one.

Roll d20 when a player rolls a natural 20 on a skill check and succeeding quietly would be a waste.

Severity tiers

Each result names its tier, so you can see at a glance how bad a roll was without decoding a colour.

The table

20 results. Roll d20.

d20Result TierWhat happens
1 They Bought It Solid Completely believed, with no reservations. No extra effect.
2 And Repeated It Solid They pass your lie on to someone else as fact.
3 Consistent Solid Your story holds up. Anyone checking it later finds it stands.
4 Covered an Ally Solid One ally's suspicious behaviour is explained away by your story too.
5 They Volunteered Solid Believing you, they offer up a piece of information you hadn't asked for.
6 No Follow-Up Solid They won't check. The matter is closed as far as they're concerned.
7 In Character Solid You have advantage on your next Deception check maintaining this same story.
8 Took the Blame Elsewhere Solid Suspicion lands on a third party of your choosing.
9 Read Them Back Solid While lying, you also learn one true thing about what they actually want.
10 Bought an Hour Solid Your story buys the party significantly more time than it should have.
11 They Take You Inside Impressive They believe you enough to bring you somewhere you had no business being.
12 The Whole Room Impressive Everyone present believes it, not just the one you were talking to.
13 Now They Vouch Impressive They will actively defend your story to others, unprompted, later.
14 Turned an Asset Impressive They begin, without realising it, acting in your interest rather than their employer's.
15 Documented Impressive You come away with something written — a pass, a letter, an order — that backs the lie up.
16 The Better Lie Impressive They fill in a detail you hadn't invented, and it's more convincing than anything you'd have said.
17 Unshakeable Impressive This identity holds for the rest of the scene without further checks, whatever happens.
18 It Becomes True Legendary The lie is believed so widely that it takes on a life of its own. The DM should treat it as fact in the world from now on.
19 Turned Them Completely Legendary The target changes sides, believing it was their own idea. They stay turned unless something drastic reveals the truth.
20 The One They'll Talk About Legendary You talk your way past the thing that was supposed to stop the party cold. The obstacle is gone, and the DM should let the consequences of your fiction ripple for sessions.

Questions

Is a natural 20 a critical success on a skill check?

Not by the rules. Criticals apply to attack rolls. A 20 on a check is a 20 — which is why a spectacular roll so often produces a shrug. This table is the house rule that fixes that.

Does a natural 20 automatically succeed?

No. On an ability check there is no automatic success — if the DC is 25 and your total is 22, you failed with a 20.
