Natural 20 Table — Athletics Skill Checks, d20
A free d20 table for a natural 20 on a Athletics check in 5e. Twenty outcomes, from solid to legendary.
A natural 20 on a skill check is not a critical success in fifth edition — criticals apply to attack rolls only, and a 20 on a check is simply a 20. Which is why a legendary roll so often feels like nothing happened. This table gives it somewhere to land.
Twenty results written for Athletics specifically. A legendary Athletics roll has nothing in common with a legendary roll at anything else, which is why there are eighteen of these and not one.
Roll d20 when a player rolls a natural 20 on a skill check and succeeding quietly would be a waste.
Severity tiers
Each result names its tier, so you can see at a glance how bad a roll was without decoding a colour.
- Solid 1–10 — Cleanly done, with something small to show for it.
- Impressive 11–17 — Better than anyone expected. Momentum, or an obstacle gone.
- Legendary 18–20 — Scene-shaping. The kind of success people repeat afterwards.
The table
20 results. Roll d20.
| d20 | Result | Tier | What happens |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Clean Line | Solid | You make it look effortless. No extra effect — but describe it well, because everyone saw. |
| 2 | Momentum | Solid | You may move 5 feet further than the effort strictly required. |
| 3 | Sure Grip | Solid | Nothing you were carrying is dropped, disturbed, or left behind. |
| 4 | Quiet Work | Solid | You manage it in near silence. The exertion imposes no penalty on Stealth. |
| 5 | Room to Spare | Solid | You could bring one ally through, over, or across with the same effort. |
| 6 | Fast | Solid | It takes roughly half the time you expected. The DM should say what that buys you. |
| 7 | Solid Footing | Solid | You have advantage on the next Dexterity saving throw you make before your next turn. |
| 8 | Read the Weight | Solid | You learn something useful about what you moved — what's behind it, how it's held, whether it's trapped. |
| 9 | Handhold Found | Solid | Anyone following your route has advantage on the same check. |
| 10 | Set the Anchor | Solid | You can secure a rope or brace the thing open. It stays that way without you holding it. |
| 11 | Effortless | Impressive | The attempt costs you no movement at all this turn. |
| 12 | Carried Two | Impressive | You bring two allies through with you, at no cost to their movement. |
| 13 | Broke It Open | Impressive | Whatever you forced is now permanently open or ruined. Nobody has to check again. |
| 14 | Vaulted Past | Impressive | You end up anywhere you choose within 10 feet — including somewhere that would normally need a second check to reach. |
| 15 | Impressed Someone | Impressive | Any creature watching that respects physical strength shifts its attitude toward you one step for the better. |
| 16 | Perfect Timing | Impressive | You may immediately make one attack or one object interaction as part of the same motion. |
| 17 | Opened the Way | Impressive | The route you made is usable by the whole party for the rest of this scene without further checks. |
| 18 | Feat of Legend | Legendary | You do something that should not be possible at your size and strength, and the DM should let it stand. You also have advantage on your next Athletics check this scene. |
| 19 | Immovable | Legendary | Until the end of the encounter you automatically succeed on Strength saving throws against being moved, knocked prone, or grappled. |
| 20 | The One They'll Talk About | Legendary | You do the impossible thing and somebody who matters sees it. You succeed at one additional related task in this scene without rolling, and the DM should have word of it reach you again in a later session. |
Questions
Is a natural 20 a critical success on a skill check?
Not by the rules. Criticals apply to attack rolls. A 20 on a check is a 20 — which is why a spectacular roll so often produces a shrug. This table is the house rule that fixes that.
Does a natural 20 automatically succeed?
No. On an ability check there is no automatic success — if the DC is 25 and your total is 22, you failed with a 20.
