Natural 20 Table — Persuasion Skill Checks, d20

A free d20 table for a natural 20 on a Persuasion check in 5e. Twenty outcomes, from solid to legendary.

A natural 20 on a skill check is not a critical success in fifth edition — criticals apply to attack rolls only, and a 20 on a check is simply a 20. Which is why a legendary roll so often feels like nothing happened. This table gives it somewhere to land.

Twenty results written for Persuasion specifically. A legendary Persuasion roll has nothing in common with a legendary roll at anything else, which is why there are eighteen of these and not one.

Roll d20 when a player rolls a natural 20 on a skill check and succeeding quietly would be a waste.

Severity tiers

Each result names its tier, so you can see at a glance how bad a roll was without decoding a colour.

The table

20 results. Roll d20.

d20Result TierWhat happens
1 They Agree Solid Willing cooperation, no strings. No extra effect.
2 Better Terms Solid They agree, and on terms notably more favourable than you asked for.
3 And Threw In Advice Solid They tell you something useful you hadn't thought to ask about.
4 No Hard Feelings Solid Whatever bad history existed, it's set aside. Their attitude improves one step.
5 They'll Wait Solid You buy the party time — a deadline moved, a decision deferred.
6 Spoke for the Party Solid One ally who was a liability in this conversation is now accepted too.
7 Building Rapport Solid You have advantage on your next Persuasion check with this creature.
8 A Name to Use Solid They give you someone else's name to invoke, and it will work.
9 Discount Solid Whatever this costs, it costs substantially less.
10 Kept It Quiet Solid They agree not to mention this conversation to anyone.
11 They Volunteer Impressive They offer active help you hadn't asked for and wouldn't have dared request.
12 The Whole Room Impressive You bring everyone present round, not just the one you were addressing.
13 An Ally Made Impressive They become a genuine contact. The party can call on them later, once, for something real.
14 Broke the Deadlock Impressive Two parties who would not deal with each other will now do so, because of you.
15 In Writing Impressive You leave with a signed, binding agreement that will hold up when it matters.
16 Changed Their Mind for Good Impressive This isn't a one-off concession. They've genuinely reconsidered their position.
17 Opened the Door Impressive You gain access to a person, place, or resource that was firmly closed to the party.
18 Turned the Enemy Legendary Someone who was opposed to the party is now on their side, honestly and durably. It should cost something eventually.
19 Averted It Legendary You talk down a conflict that the campaign was building toward. The DM should let the fight simply not happen.
20 The One They'll Talk About Legendary You win an argument nobody believed could be won, in front of people who matter. The DM should let it reshape a faction's stance toward the party for good.

Questions

Is a natural 20 a critical success on a skill check?

Not by the rules. Criticals apply to attack rolls. A 20 on a check is a 20 — which is why a spectacular roll so often produces a shrug. This table is the house rule that fixes that.

Does a natural 20 automatically succeed?

No. On an ability check there is no automatic success — if the DC is 25 and your total is 22, you failed with a 20.
