Natural 20 Table — History Skill Checks, d20

A free d20 table for a natural 20 on a History check in 5e. Twenty outcomes, from solid to legendary.

A natural 20 on a skill check is not a critical success in fifth edition — criticals apply to attack rolls only, and a 20 on a check is simply a 20. Which is why a legendary roll so often feels like nothing happened. This table gives it somewhere to land.

Twenty results written for History specifically. A legendary History roll has nothing in common with a legendary roll at anything else, which is why there are eighteen of these and not one.

Roll d20 when a player rolls a natural 20 on a skill check and succeeding quietly would be a waste.

Severity tiers

Each result names its tier, so you can see at a glance how bad a roll was without decoding a colour.

The table

20 results. Roll d20.

d20Result TierWhat happens
1 Chapter and Verse Solid You recall the fact exactly, with the detail nobody else would have. No extra effect.
2 And the Date Solid You place it precisely in time, which turns out to matter.
3 Who Built It Solid You know who made this place or object, and roughly why.
4 The Family Name Solid You recognise a crest, a seal, or a name here, and know who it belongs to.
5 There Was a Second One Solid You recall that a counterpart to this thing exists, and roughly where.
6 Old Grudge Solid You remember a rivalry or debt relevant to the situation. Someone here can be leveraged with it.
7 Well Read Solid You have advantage on your next History check this scene.
8 The Layout Solid You recall how buildings of this age and type are laid out. You know where the other rooms are.
9 Told It Well Solid One ally who listens has advantage on their next Charisma check with anyone who cares about this history.
10 It Was a Lie Solid You know that the accepted version of this story is false, and what actually happened.
11 The Forgotten Entrance Impressive You remember a way in or out that no longer appears on any map.
12 Precedent Impressive You recall exactly how this problem was solved last time. The method still works.
13 Rightful Claim Impressive You establish a legal, hereditary, or traditional claim that the party can invoke here.
14 The Name It Answers To Impressive You recall a true name, password, or formula that compels or opens something in this place.
15 Where It Went Impressive You know what became of the thing everyone assumes was lost.
16 Shared the Context Impressive Every ally who can hear you has advantage on their next Intelligence check relating to this place.
17 The Pattern Impressive You realise this is part of a sequence. The DM tells you what comes next and roughly when.
18 The Whole Truth Legendary You reconstruct what really happened here, in full. The DM gives you the actual history, not the version in the books.
19 Living Memory Legendary You recall something so obscure that only one other person alive knows it — and you now know who that person is and where to find them.
20 The One They'll Talk About Legendary Your recall resolves a mystery the campaign had been building. The DM should let it genuinely skip a step, and scholars will cite you for it.

Questions

Is a natural 20 a critical success on a skill check?

Not by the rules. Criticals apply to attack rolls. A 20 on a check is a 20 — which is why a spectacular roll so often produces a shrug. This table is the house rule that fixes that.

Does a natural 20 automatically succeed?

No. On an ability check there is no automatic success — if the DC is 25 and your total is 22, you failed with a 20.
