Natural 20 Table — Performance Skill Checks, d20

A free d20 table for a natural 20 on a Performance check in 5e. Twenty outcomes, from solid to legendary.

A natural 20 on a skill check is not a critical success in fifth edition — criticals apply to attack rolls only, and a 20 on a check is simply a 20. Which is why a legendary roll so often feels like nothing happened. This table gives it somewhere to land.

Twenty results written for Performance specifically. A legendary Performance roll has nothing in common with a legendary roll at anything else, which is why there are eighteen of these and not one.

Roll d20 when a player rolls a natural 20 on a skill check and succeeding quietly would be a waste.

Severity tiers

Each result names its tier, so you can see at a glance how bad a roll was without decoding a colour.

The table

20 results. Roll d20.

d20Result TierWhat happens
1 They Loved It Solid Genuine applause. No extra effect beyond a warm room.
2 Paid Well Solid You earn considerably more than the venue would normally give.
3 Held Their Eyes Solid Nobody in the room is watching anything except you — including whatever your allies are doing.
4 Requested Again Solid You're welcome back here any time, on good terms.
5 Heard the Gossip Solid Between sets you pick up one useful piece of local information.
6 Lifted the Room Solid One ally has advantage on their next Charisma check with anyone who watched.
7 Warmed Up Solid You have advantage on your next Performance check this scene.
8 A Free Room Solid Lodging, a meal, or passage is offered to the whole party at no cost.
9 Someone Wept Solid You move one specific person deeply. Their attitude toward you improves one step.
10 Bought the Time Solid The distraction lasts as long as the party needs it to.
11 Nobody Left Impressive For as long as you perform, no creature in the room will leave or start trouble.
12 The Whole Town Impressive Word spreads by morning. The party's reception in this settlement is transformed.
13 A Patron Impressive Someone of means and influence wants to sponsor you. The DM should make them useful and slightly inconvenient.
14 Sang Them Down Impressive A tense situation defuses completely. Nobody draws a weapon tonight.
15 The Message in the Song Impressive You communicate something to an ally, or to a stranger, that nobody else in the room understands.
16 Inspired Them Impressive Every ally who watched has advantage on their first ability check in the next scene.
17 Invited Up Impressive You are brought before whoever actually runs this place, on friendly terms.
18 They'll Sing It Back Legendary Your piece enters local tradition. People here will be singing it years from now, and it carries your version of events.
19 Moved the Immovable Legendary You reach someone who cannot normally be reached — a tyrant, a grieving god, something inhuman. It listens, and it is changed.
20 The One They'll Talk About Legendary The performance becomes the event of the season. Doors open across the region, and the DM should let it solve a social problem the party had no other way through.

Questions

Is a natural 20 a critical success on a skill check?

Not by the rules. Criticals apply to attack rolls. A 20 on a check is a 20 — which is why a spectacular roll so often produces a shrug. This table is the house rule that fixes that.

Does a natural 20 automatically succeed?

No. On an ability check there is no automatic success — if the DC is 25 and your total is 22, you failed with a 20.
