Critical Fumble Table — Spell Attacks (Monsters), d100
A free d100 critical fumble table for spell attacks in 5e — 100 hand-written outcomes, graded by severity.
Fifth edition has no critical fumble rule. A natural 1 on an attack roll simply misses — that is all the rules say. Everything below is an optional table for tables that want a miss to be worth describing, and it is the DM's call whether to use one at all.
The usual method: when a player rolls a natural 1 on an attack roll, roll d100 here and read the result. Some tables only roll on a confirmed fumble — a second attack roll that also misses — which makes the spectacular results roughly five times rarer. Severity climbs with the roll, so a low number is embarrassing and a high one is expensive.
These hundred results are written specifically for spell attacks made by monsters, so the failure fits what was actually being attempted — a fumbled spell goes wrong differently from a dropped axe.
Severity tiers
Each result names its tier, so you can see at a glance how bad a roll was without decoding a colour.
- Clumsy 1–20 — Embarrassing. Costs you nothing but face.
- Setback 21–40 — A real but minor tactical cost.
- Blunder 41–60 — Costs you the turn, the weapon, or the position.
- Disaster 61–80 — You are now worse off than before you swung.
- Catastrophe 81–95 — Real loss. Someone is going to remember this.
- Legendary Fumble 96–100 — Rare, spectacular, and survivable. Describe it in loving detail.
The table
100 results. Roll d100.
| d100 | Result | Tier | What happens |
|---|---|---|---|
Fizzle | Clumsy | The power gutters out with a damp cough. No mechanical effect beyond the failure.
Cracked Incantation | Clumsy | The intonation falters halfway. No effect, but everyone present heard it break.
Static Discharge | Clumsy | Its hide, scales, or robes stand on end for a minute. Cosmetic.
Component Dropped | Clumsy | One non-costly material component falls into its space.
Ozone Bloom | Clumsy | A sharp reek of burnt air. Anything within 30 feet that can smell knows magic was worked here.
Numb Maw | Clumsy | It has disadvantage on its next Charisma check.
Cold Limbs | Clumsy | Its extremities go briefly numb. No mechanical effect.
Afterimage | Clumsy | Colour swims across its vision. No mechanical effect, but it is visibly distracted.
Wrong Syllable | Clumsy | The magic fails and it finishes in a language it did not intend to use. A player may make an Arcana or History check to catch a name worth remembering.
Focus Slipped | Clumsy | Its focus, idol, or bound token twists out of position. Righting it costs a free object interaction.
Ears Popped | Clumsy | It has disadvantage on its next Perception check that relies on hearing.
Sparks | Clumsy | Sparks scorch its sleeve, mane, or wing membrane. Cosmetic.
Feedback Hum | Clumsy | A sustained note only it can hear. No effect, and increasingly irritating.
Sigil Smudged | Clumsy | If its casting involves drawn or inscribed components, redrawing costs a free object interaction.
Gesture Failed | Clumsy | No effect. The shape of the working was simply wrong, and it knows it.
Momentary Vertigo | Clumsy | It can't take a bonus action this turn if it hasn't already used one.
Cold Snap | Clumsy | Frost blooms across the nearest surfaces. Purely cosmetic.
Familiar Startled | Clumsy | If it has a familiar or bound servant, that creature bolts and won't approach it until the end of its next turn.
Arcane Hiccup | Clumsy | No mechanical effect now. It recurs later, at the DM's discretion, ideally at the worst moment.
It Corrects | Clumsy | It feels exactly where the working slipped. No penalty, and the next creature to make a saving throw against one of its spells before the end of its next turn does so with disadvantage.
Weave Slips | Setback | Its next attack roll this turn is made with disadvantage.
Components Spilled | Setback | 1d4 non-costly material components fall into its space.
Somatic Cramp | Setback | It has disadvantage on the next Dexterity saving throw it makes.
Exposed in the Casting | Setback | It grants advantage to the next attack roll made against it before the start of its next turn.
Slow Recovery | Setback | It can't take reactions until the start of its next turn.
Feedback Jolt | Setback | If it's concentrating, it must succeed on a DC 10 Constitution saving throw or lose concentration.
Rooted by Backlash | Setback | Its speed is reduced by 10 feet until the end of its next turn.
Voice Lost | Setback | It can't cast spells with verbal components until the end of its next turn.
Focus Fouled | Setback | Its next spell attack deals 2 less damage (minimum 1).
Mana Burn | Setback | The backlash nips at it. It takes 1 damage.
Wild Flicker | Setback | A harmless illusory echo of the working blooms 10 feet away. One creature of the DM's choice turns toward it.
Off-Rhythm | Setback | On its next turn it can move or take an action, not both. Bonus actions still work.
Spent Momentum | Setback | It can't cast another spell this turn, not even as a bonus action.
Dazzled by Its Own Light | Setback | It has disadvantage on its next attack roll and its next Perception check.
Read by the Party | Setback | The next creature to make a saving throw against one of its spells before the end of its next turn has advantage on it.
Bleeding at the Eyes | Setback | It takes 1 damage and is visibly, obviously hurt. The party can tell.
Ringing in the Weave | Setback | It has disadvantage on the next Intelligence check it makes.
Reserves Doubted | Setback | The DM should start tracking this creature's remaining slots or ability uses honestly from here.
Backdraft | Setback | An allied creature within 5 feet catches the edge of it. That ally's next attack roll is made with disadvantage.
Braced Low | Setback | It isn't prone, but it's hunched and awkward. Standing fully costs 5 feet of movement.
Focus Dropped | Blunder | Its focus falls into its space. Picking it up costs an object interaction.
Focus Flung | Blunder | Its focus skitters 10 feet away in a random direction.
Slot Guttered | Blunder | The spell slot or ability use is expended with nothing to show for it. If it was an at-will ability, it can't be used again until the end of its next turn.
Turn Unravels | Blunder | The working comes apart entirely. Its turn ends immediately.
Backlash on an Ally | Blunder | An allied creature within 5 feet takes 1d6 force damage.
Components Scattered | Blunder | Half its non-costly material components (round down) spill 10 feet away.
Knocked Flat | Blunder | The recoil puts it on the ground. It falls prone.
Concentration Broken | Blunder | It loses concentration on any spell or effect it's maintaining. No saving throw.
Grasping Weave | Blunder | Half-formed spectral hands seize it. It's restrained until it uses an action to break free with a DC 12 Arcana or Athletics check.
Rooted | Blunder | Its speed is 0 until the end of its next turn.
Feedback Burn | Blunder | It takes 1d6 force damage.
Blinding Flare | Blunder | It's blinded until the end of its next turn.
Sigil Scorched | Blunder | A piece of its visible regalia burns loose and falls into its space.
Wild Discharge | Blunder | The creature nearest to it — ally or enemy — must succeed on a DC 10 Dexterity saving throw or take 1d4 force damage.
Beacon | Blunder | Every creature within 60 feet now knows this is the caster and exactly where it stands. If the party hadn't decided who to focus on, they have now.
Trembling Limbs | Blunder | It has disadvantage on all attack rolls until the end of its next turn.
Pouch Torn Away | Blunder | Its component pouch is ripped loose and lands 10 feet away.
Recoil Step | Blunder | It's shoved 10 feet directly away from its target.
Focus Cracked | Blunder | Its spell attacks deal 2 less damage (minimum 1) for the rest of the encounter.
Collapse | Blunder | It falls prone and drops whatever it was holding.
Arcane Burn | Disaster | The backlash goes straight through it. It takes 2d6 force damage.
Weave Sickness | Disaster | It has disadvantage on all attack rolls for the rest of the encounter.
Backlash Through a Friend | Disaster | The allied creature nearest to it takes 2d6 force damage.
Slot Seared | Disaster | It loses one additional spell slot or ability use of the same level, or of the highest it has remaining.
Focus Lost | Disaster | Its focus is flung 20 feet in a random direction, into whatever the terrain offers.
Stunned by Feedback | Disaster | It's stunned until the end of its next turn.
Wards Unravelled | Disaster | Every spell it currently has active with a duration ends immediately. For a creature that spent three rounds buffing itself, this is the whole fight turning over.
Ground Warped | Disaster | The ground buckles beneath it. It falls prone and is restrained until it uses an action to pull free.
Blinded by Backlash | Disaster | It's blinded until the end of its next turn.
Attention of the Weave | Disaster | The creature it targeted has advantage on attack rolls against it until the end of that creature's next turn.
Focus Broken | Disaster | A non-magical focus is ruined. A magical one is dimmed — its spell attacks deal 2 less damage (minimum 1) for the rest of the encounter.
Drawn In | Disaster | It's hauled 10 feet toward its target and provokes an opportunity attack from every hostile creature that can reach it.
Frayed Nerves | Disaster | It has disadvantage on Constitution saving throws for the rest of the encounter.
Backwash Wave | Disaster | Every allied creature within 5 feet must succeed on a DC 12 Dexterity saving throw or fall prone.
Light Snuffed | Disaster | Every non-magical light source within 10 feet goes out, and any magical light it created ends.
Winded and Down | Disaster | It falls prone, and its speed is 0 until the end of its next turn.
Reagents Lost | Disaster | A costly material component it was carrying is ruined. It can't cast anything requiring that component for the rest of the encounter — and possibly for a good while after.
Numb to the Weave | Disaster | It can't cast any spell until the end of its next turn.
Deafened by the Discharge | Disaster | It's deafened for 1 minute and can no longer hear its allies.
Recoil | Disaster | It takes 1d6 force damage and falls prone.
Ally Caught in Full | Catastrophe | The allied creature nearest to it suffers the spell's full effect as though it had been the target. If the effect allows a saving throw, that ally makes it.
Focus Shattered | Catastrophe | A non-magical focus is destroyed outright. A magical one is unusable for the rest of the encounter.
Turned Inward | Catastrophe | It suffers the spell's own effect as though it had been the target. If the effect allows a saving throw, it makes it.
Thrown Clear | Catastrophe | It's hurled 15 feet in a random direction, lands prone, and takes 2d6 force damage.
Sightless | Catastrophe | It's blinded for the rest of the encounter.
Casting Limb Seized | Catastrophe | The limb locks rigid — permanently, barring magical healing. It can't cast spells with somatic components.
Structural Collapse | Catastrophe | The discharge brings the place down. Every creature within 10 feet must succeed on a DC 13 Dexterity saving throw or take 2d6 bludgeoning damage, and the DM may destroy a piece of cover permanently.
Something Answered | Catastrophe | The surge is noticed by something that had no business listening. It arrives in 1d4 rounds, and it is not the monster's friend.
Bindings Undone | Catastrophe | Everything it was grappling, restraining, charming, frightening, or holding under compulsion is released. Any creature it summoned or bound is no longer under its control, and the DM decides what that creature does about it.
Reserves Seared | Catastrophe | It loses its two lowest-level remaining spell slots or ability uses.
Focus in the Party's Hands | Catastrophe | Its focus lands in a player character's space. They may pick it up as a free object interaction, and it is exactly as valuable as it appears.
Concussed by Feedback | Catastrophe | It's stunned until the end of its next turn, and has disadvantage on all ability checks for the rest of the encounter.
Backlash, Badly | Catastrophe | The spell resolves in full against the allied creature nearest to it. If it called for an attack roll, make that roll against them; if it allows a save, they make it.
Everything Falls | Catastrophe | It drops its focus, its components, and one carried item, each into a different space within 10 feet.
Out of the Fight | Catastrophe | It falls prone, drops its focus, and its turn ends. It can't take reactions until the start of its next turn.
The Weave Tears | Legendary | A rift opens where the working should have been. The DM introduces a hazard, a countdown, or something already on its way through — and whatever comes through owes this creature nothing. It takes 4d6 force damage and falls prone.
Focus Destroyed Utterly | Legendary | The focus is gone — shattered, swallowed, unmade. A magical focus does not survive this either. If this creature's power rested on a phylactery, a bound gem, or a heartstone, the DM should decide what losing it costs, and the answer should be a great deal.
Cast Upon Its Own Champion | Legendary | The spell resolves in full against the most dangerous allied creature in range, treated as a critical hit if it deals damage — roll the damage dice twice. It worked perfectly, on precisely the wrong creature.
Knocked Itself Out | Legendary | The backlash puts the creature down. It's unconscious for 1 minute, or until it takes damage. For most encounters this ends its participation entirely.
The One They'll Tell Stories About | Legendary | The working fails in the most conspicuous way magic can: wrong colour, wrong size, wrong direction, and felt in the next room. It's prone and separated from its focus. Every creature that can see it has advantage on attack rolls against it until the start of its next turn, and each of its allies that witnessed this must succeed on a DC 10 Wisdom saving throw or have disadvantage on its next attack roll. If this creature had a reputation, it is now an anecdote.
Questions
Do critical fumbles exist in 5e?
No. A natural 1 on an attack roll misses, and that is the whole rule. Fumble tables are a house rule, and a popular one — but nothing in the game requires them.
Should a natural 1 always miss?
Yes, on an attack roll — that part IS a rule. A table like this describes the miss; it does not change whether you hit.
Doesn't this punish martial characters?
It can. A fighter with three attacks rolls far more d20s than a wizard, so a per-roll fumble rule falls hardest on the people who attack most. Rolling only on a confirmed fumble evens it out considerably.
