Critical Fumble Table — Ranged Attacks (Players), d100

A free d100 critical fumble table for ranged attacks in 5e — 100 hand-written outcomes, graded by severity.

Fifth edition has no critical fumble rule. A natural 1 on an attack roll simply misses — that is all the rules say. Everything below is an optional table for tables that want a miss to be worth describing, and it is the DM's call whether to use one at all.

The usual method: when a player rolls a natural 1 on an attack roll, roll d100 here and read the result. Some tables only roll on a confirmed fumble — a second attack roll that also misses — which makes the spectacular results roughly five times rarer. Severity climbs with the roll, so a low number is embarrassing and a high one is expensive.

These hundred results are written specifically for ranged attacks made by players, so the failure fits what was actually being attempted — a fumbled spell goes wrong differently from a dropped axe.

Severity tiers

Each result names its tier, so you can see at a glance how bad a roll was without decoding a colour.

The table

100 results. Roll d100.

d100Result TierWhat happens
1 Wide of the Mark Clumsy The shot sails off into the dark and is never heard from again. No mechanical effect.
2 Fumbled Nock Clumsy You never quite seated the arrow. No effect beyond the look on your face.
3 String Slap Clumsy The string catches your forearm. It stings, it welts, it does nothing.
4 Dropped Shot Clumsy One piece of ammunition falls into your space. Picking it up costs an object interaction.
5 Quiver Rattle Clumsy Your quiver clatters. Any creature within 60 feet that can hear is alerted to your position.
6 Sun in Your Eyes Clumsy You have disadvantage on your next Perception check that relies on sight.
7 Sweaty Grip Clumsy Your hand slips on the grip. No effect — you wipe it on your trousers and try again.
8 Bent Fletching Clumsy That piece of ammunition is spent. It can't be recovered after the fight.
9 Wrong Draw Clumsy You loosed a blunt, a practice shaft, or the one with the sentimental value. No effect.
10 Overdrawn Clumsy You have disadvantage on your next Athletics check.
11 Snapped Nock Clumsy One piece of ammunition splits and is ruined.
12 Shot the Scenery Clumsy Your shot buries itself in a beam, a portrait, or a tavern sign. Conspicuously.
13 The Wind Took It Clumsy No mechanical effect. Blame the weather, loudly, so everyone hears you do it.
14 Cramped Fingers Clumsy Your next attack this turn, if you have one, deals 1 less damage (minimum 1).
15 Twisted Strap Clumsy Your quiver strap rides up across your chest. Straightening it costs a free object interaction.
16 Misjudged the Range Clumsy You were off by a good margin. No penalty — but the DM should tell you by how much.
17 Audible Frustration Clumsy No mechanical effect. Whatever you just said, the paladin heard it.
18 Slipped Stance Clumsy You can't take a bonus action this turn if you haven't already used it.
19 Grit in the Works Clumsy If your weapon has the loading property, your next reload costs an extra free hand's fussing. Otherwise cosmetic.
20 Ranging Shot Clumsy The miss tells you exactly how far off you were. No penalty, and you have advantage on your next attack roll against that creature.
21 Fouled String Setback Your next attack roll this turn is made with disadvantage.
22 Quiver Spilled Setback 1d4 pieces of ammunition scatter into your space.
23 Bad Sightline Setback Your target has three-quarters cover against you until you move to a different space.

28 Cramped Shoulder Setback You have disadvantage on the next Strength check or Strength saving throw you make.
29 Jammed Reload Setback If your weapon has the loading property, you can't fire it until you use an action to clear it.
30 Frayed String Setback Your next attack deals 2 less damage (minimum 1).
31 Startled by the Snap Setback If you're concentrating on a spell, make a DC 10 Constitution saving throw or lose concentration.
32 Off-Rhythm Setback On your next turn you can move or take an action, not both. Bonus actions still work.
33 Wasted Volley Setback You can't make any additional attacks this turn, even if you had them remaining.
34 Sun-Dazzled Setback You have disadvantage on your next ranged attack roll and your next Perception check.
35 Telegraphed Draw Setback The target has advantage on saving throws against the next effect you create.
36 String Welt Setback The string catches you across the arm. You take 1 damage.
37 Quiver Askew Setback Spend 5 feet of movement righting it, or draw at disadvantage on your next turn.
38 Lost Count Setback You no longer know how much ammunition you have. The DM tracks it secretly until your next short rest.
39 Too Close to a Friend Setback An ally within 5 feet of your target flinches. Their next attack roll is made with disadvantage.
40 Knelt Wrong Setback You aren't prone, but you're braced awkwardly. Standing fully costs 5 feet of movement.
41 Weapon Dropped Blunder Your weapon falls into your space. Picking it up costs an object interaction.
42 Weapon Flung Blunder Your weapon skitters 10 feet away in a random direction.

48 Concentration Broken Blunder You lose concentration on any spell you're maintaining. No saving throw.
49 Pinned to Cover Blunder Your own shot pins your sleeve or cloak to the cover beside you. Use an action to work it free, or take 1 damage tearing loose.
50 Fell Back Blunder The recoil overbalances you. You fall prone.

69 Blood in Your Eyes Disaster You're blinded until the end of your next turn.
70 Marked Disaster The creature you missed has advantage on attack rolls against you until the end of its next turn.
71 Weapon Broken Disaster A non-magical ranged weapon is ruined. A magical one is merely warped — it deals 2 less damage (minimum 1) until repaired over a short rest with the right tools.
72 Position Blown Disaster Every hostile creature that can see you now knows exactly where you are. You lose the benefit of cover until you move to a new space.
73 Cracked Ribs Disaster You have disadvantage on Constitution saving throws until you finish a long rest.
74 Pinned an Ally Disaster Your shot pins an ally's clothing to cover. They're restrained until they or someone else uses an action to free them.
75 Dropped Your Light Disaster Your torch, lantern, or other light source falls and goes out — or rolls 15 feet away if it can't be extinguished.
76 Winded and Down Disaster You fall prone, and your speed is 0 until the end of your next turn.
77 Spilled Pack Disaster One item from your inventory — DM's choice, never an attuned one — falls into your space and may be trampled.
78 Numb Hands Disaster You drop everything you're holding and can't pick anything up until the end of your next turn.
79 Deafened by the Crack Disaster You're deafened for 1 minute.
80 Recoil Disaster You take one roll of your weapon's damage die and fall prone.
81 Ally Struck Hard Catastrophe The ally nearest your target takes the attack's full damage, modifiers included, exactly as though you had hit them.
82 Weapon Shattered Catastrophe A non-magical weapon is destroyed outright. A magical one survives but is unusable until an hour's work with the right tools puts it right.
83 Shaft Through the Hand Catastrophe You take double your weapon's damage die and are badly wounded: you have disadvantage on attack rolls until you regain any hit points.
84 Thrown Clear Catastrophe You're hurled 15 feet in a random direction, land prone, and take 1d6 bludgeoning damage.
85 Sightless Catastrophe You're blinded until you regain any hit points or an ally spends an action tending to your eyes.
86 Drawing Hand Broken Catastrophe You can't use any weapon that needs two hands — bows included — until a lesser restoration or a long rest with proper care.
87 Structural Collapse Catastrophe Your shot brings something down. Every creature within 5 feet of you, yourself included, must succeed on a DC 13 Dexterity saving throw or take 2d6 bludgeoning damage.
88 Attracted Attention Catastrophe The noise carries a long way. A wandering monster or reinforcement of the DM's choice arrives in 1d4 rounds.
89 Enemy Freed Catastrophe If the target was grappled, restrained, or otherwise controlled by you or an ally, that control ends immediately.
90 Ammunition Lost Catastrophe All your remaining ammunition for this weapon is scattered or ruined. You're down to what you can scavenge off the battlefield.
91 Dropped in Enemy Hands Catastrophe Your weapon lands in a hostile creature's space. It may pick the weapon up as a free object interaction.
92 Concussed Catastrophe You're stunned until the end of your next turn, and you have disadvantage on Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma checks until you finish a long rest.
93 Friendly Fire, Badly Catastrophe Make the attack roll again against the ally nearest your target, using the same modifiers. On a hit, they take full damage.
94 Everything Falls Catastrophe You drop your weapon, your quiver, and one other held item, each into a different space within 10 feet.
95 Out of the Fight Catastrophe You fall prone, drop your weapon, and your turn ends. You can't take reactions until the start of your next turn.
96 The Shot Heard Everywhere Legendary Your shot severs something that was holding the room together — a chandelier chain, a support rope, a dam. The DM introduces a hazard or a countdown. You take 2d6 bludgeoning damage and fall prone.
97 Into the Void Legendary Your weapon leaves your hand and the encounter: over the cliff, into the river, out the window. Recovering it is a side quest, not an action. A magical weapon is always recoverable eventually — the DM decides how far you'll travel.
98 A Superb Shot, Wrong Target Legendary The attack resolves in full against the ally nearest your target, as a critical hit. Roll the damage dice twice. It was, technically, the finest shot you have ever made.
99 Strung Yourself Legendary You end up wrapped in your own bowstring and unconscious for 1 minute, or until you take damage or an ally uses an action to cut you free. You are not dying — you are merely tangled.
100 The One They'll Tell Stories About Legendary You end up disarmed and prone, with your own ammunition embedded somewhere absurd and highly visible — a hat, a shield, a portrait of someone important. Every creature that can see you, friend and foe alike, has advantage on attack rolls against you until the start of your next turn. You take no damage. Your reputation takes all of it.

Questions

Do critical fumbles exist in 5e?

No. A natural 1 on an attack roll misses, and that is the whole rule. Fumble tables are a house rule, and a popular one — but nothing in the game requires them.

Should a natural 1 always miss?

Yes, on an attack roll — that part IS a rule. A table like this describes the miss; it does not change whether you hit.

Doesn't this punish martial characters?

It can. A fighter with three attacks rolls far more d20s than a wizard, so a per-roll fumble rule falls hardest on the people who attack most. Rolling only on a confirmed fumble evens it out considerably.
