Critical Fumble Table — Melee Attacks (Players), d100
A free d100 critical fumble table for melee attacks in 5e — 100 hand-written outcomes, graded by severity.
Fifth edition has no critical fumble rule. A natural 1 on an attack roll simply misses — that is all the rules say. Everything below is an optional table for tables that want a miss to be worth describing, and it is the DM's call whether to use one at all.
The usual method: when a player rolls a natural 1 on an attack roll, roll d100 here and read the result. Some tables only roll on a confirmed fumble — a second attack roll that also misses — which makes the spectacular results roughly five times rarer. Severity climbs with the roll, so a low number is embarrassing and a high one is expensive.
These hundred results are written specifically for melee attacks made by players, so the failure fits what was actually being attempted — a fumbled spell goes wrong differently from a dropped axe.
Severity tiers
Each result names its tier, so you can see at a glance how bad a roll was without decoding a colour.
- Clumsy 1–20 — Embarrassing. Costs you nothing but face.
- Setback 21–40 — A real but minor tactical cost.
- Blunder 41–60 — Costs you the turn, the weapon, or the position.
- Disaster 61–80 — You are now worse off than before you swung.
- Catastrophe 81–95 — Real loss. Someone is going to remember this.
- Legendary Fumble 96–100 — Rare, spectacular, and survivable. Describe it in loving detail.
The table
100 results. Roll d100.
| d100 | Result | Tier | What happens |
|---|---|---|---|
Wild Swing | Clumsy | Your blade whistles through empty air and carries you half around. No mechanical effect — describe the recovery.
Bitten Tongue | Clumsy | You bite your tongue on the follow-through. No effect, but you talk funny for the rest of the encounter.
Scuffed Boots | Clumsy | You skid on loose ground and just barely stay upright. Purely cosmetic, but everyone heard it.
Ringing Steel | Clumsy | Your weapon rings off stone. Any creature within 60 feet that can hear is alerted to your position.
Jarred Wrist | Clumsy | The impact travels up your arm. No effect — you shake your hand out and glare at the weapon.
Overcommitted | Clumsy | You end your turn facing the wrong way. No mechanical effect; the DM should mention it whenever it would be funniest.
Cracked Knuckle | Clumsy | You rap your knuckles on your own crossguard. It hurts a great deal and does nothing.
Splintered Haft | Clumsy | A splinter lifts off your weapon's grip. Cosmetic; the weapon works fine. Fixable during a short rest.
Sweat in Your Eyes | Clumsy | You have disadvantage on your next Perception check.
Fouled Cloak | Clumsy | Your cloak wraps your sword arm. The first 5 feet you move on your next turn costs double.
Wrong Grip | Clumsy | Your next attack this turn, if you have one, deals 1 less damage (minimum 1).
Loud Miss | Clumsy | Your weapon clangs off a shield, a wall, or a helmet. One nearby creature of the DM's choice turns to look at you.
Dust Cloud | Clumsy | You kick up grit. You have disadvantage on your next Perception check that relies on sight.
Muttered Curse | Clumsy | No mechanical effect. You said something your cleric definitely heard.
Pulled Muscle | Clumsy | You have disadvantage on your next Athletics check.
Slipped Gauntlet | Clumsy | Your gauntlet or glove twists on your hand. Straightening it costs a free object interaction.
Telegraphed Badly | Clumsy | No penalty, but the DM describes exactly how obvious that swing was from across the room.
Chipped Blade | Clumsy | A nick in the edge. Cosmetic — a short rest and a whetstone puts it right.
Off-Balance Recovery | Clumsy | You can't take a bonus action this turn if you haven't already used it.
Lesson Learned | Clumsy | The miss teaches you something about how this creature moves. No penalty, and you have advantage on your next attack roll against it.
Overextended | Setback | You grant advantage to the next attack roll made against you before the start of your next turn.
Weapon Wide | Setback | Your next attack roll this turn is made with disadvantage.
Dropped Guard | Setback | Your AC is reduced by 2 until the start of your next turn.
Snagged Strap | Setback | Your pack catches on something. Spend 5 feet of movement to free it, or leave it behind.
Wrong Foot | Setback | Your speed is reduced by 10 feet until the end of your next turn.
Reaction Spent | Setback | You can't take reactions until the start of your next turn.
Fouled Follow-Through | Setback | You can't move for the rest of this turn.
Jarring Impact | Setback | If you're concentrating on a spell, make a DC 10 Constitution saving throw or lose concentration.
Twisted Ankle | Setback | Your movement provokes one additional opportunity attack this round.
Shield Askew | Setback | If you're using a shield, you lose its AC bonus until you spend a bonus action righting it.
Numb Fingers | Setback | Your next attack roll with that hand is made with disadvantage.
Winded | Setback | On your next turn you can move or take an action, not both. Bonus actions still work.
Blade Caught | Setback | Your weapon lodges in armour, a shield, or timber. Freeing it takes an action and a successful DC 10 Strength check.
Poor Footing | Setback | You have disadvantage on Dexterity saving throws until the end of your next turn.
Read Like a Book | Setback | The target has advantage on saving throws against the next effect you create.
Pommel to the Chin | Setback | You take 1 damage and look ridiculous doing it.
Loose Bracer | Setback | You have disadvantage on the next Strength check or Strength saving throw you make.
Momentum Lost | Setback | You can't make any additional attacks this turn, even if you had them remaining.
Sprayed Grit | Setback | One ally within 5 feet has disadvantage on their next attack roll.
Down to One Knee | Setback | You aren't prone, but you're low and awkward. Standing fully costs 5 feet of movement.
Weapon Dropped | Blunder | Your weapon falls into your space. Picking it up costs an object interaction.
Weapon Flung | Blunder | Your weapon sails 10 feet in a random direction and lands where it lands.
Overbalanced | Blunder | You fall prone.
Full Whiff | Blunder | You miss so completely that your turn ends immediately.
Struck the Wall | Blunder | Your weapon bites deep into stone or timber. You take 1 damage, and freeing the weapon takes an action and a DC 12 Strength check.
Carried Away | Blunder | Your own momentum moves you 5 feet in the direction of the swing, DM's choice of exact space. If that space is dangerous, so be it.
Legs Give Out | Blunder | Your speed is 0 until the end of your next turn.
Concentration Broken | Blunder | You lose concentration on any spell you're maintaining. No saving throw.
Fouled an Ally | Blunder | An ally within 5 feet is knocked off balance. Their next attack roll is made with disadvantage.
Caught by the Terrain | Blunder | Vines, rubble, or a corpse catches your leg. You're restrained until you use an action to break free with a DC 12 Athletics or Acrobatics check.
Backswing | Blunder | You take damage equal to one roll of your weapon's damage die, with no modifiers.
Helmet Spun | Blunder | Your helm is over your eyes. You're blinded until you use an object interaction to right it.
Sundered Strap | Blunder | A piece of your visible gear, DM's choice, falls into your space.
Wild Arc | Blunder | The creature nearest to you — ally or enemy — must succeed on a DC 10 Dexterity saving throw or take 1 damage from the flat of your weapon.
Exposed Flank | Blunder | The target may immediately make one opportunity attack against you.
Gasping | Blunder | You have disadvantage on all attack rolls until the end of your next turn.
Shield Ripped Away | Blunder | If you're using a shield, it's torn from your arm and lands 10 feet away.
Lost the Line | Blunder | You're carried 10 feet away from your target by your own swing.
Weapon Bent | Blunder | Your weapon deals 2 less damage (minimum 1) until it's straightened over a short rest.
Crashing Fall | Blunder | You fall prone and drop whatever you were holding.
Deep Self-Cut | Disaster | You take damage equal to one roll of your weapon's damage die plus your ability modifier.
Hamstrung Yourself | Disaster | Your speed is halved until you finish a short or long rest.
Struck an Ally | Disaster | An ally within 5 feet takes one roll of your weapon's damage die, with no modifiers.
Dislocated Shoulder | Disaster | You have disadvantage on all attack rolls with that arm until someone succeeds on a DC 13 Medicine check to set it.
Weapon Lost to the Dark | Disaster | Your weapon is flung 20 feet in a random direction, into whatever the terrain offers.
Stunned by Your Own Blow | Disaster | You're stunned until the end of your next turn.
Armour Compromised | Disaster | Straps tear. Your AC is reduced by 2 until you finish a short rest putting it right.
Collapsed Footing | Disaster | The ground gives beneath you. You fall prone and are restrained until you use an action to climb out.
Blood in Your Eyes | Disaster | You're blinded until the end of your next turn.
Enraged Target | Disaster | The creature you missed has advantage on attack rolls against you until the end of its next turn.
Weapon Broken | Disaster | A non-magical weapon is ruined. A magical weapon is merely bent — it deals 2 less damage (minimum 1) until repaired over a short rest with the right tools.
Pulled Into Reach | Disaster | You stumble into the target's space and provoke an opportunity attack from every hostile creature that can reach you.
Cracked Ribs | Disaster | You have disadvantage on Constitution saving throws until you finish a long rest.
Fouled the Formation | Disaster | Every ally within 5 feet must succeed on a DC 12 Dexterity saving throw or fall prone.
Dropped Your Light | Disaster | Your torch, lantern, or other light source falls and goes out — or rolls 15 feet away if it can't be extinguished.
Winded and Down | Disaster | You fall prone, and your speed is 0 until the end of your next turn.
Spilled Pack | Disaster | One item from your inventory — DM's choice, never an attuned one — falls into your space and may be trampled.
Nerve Struck | Disaster | You drop everything you're holding and can't pick anything up until the end of your next turn.
Deafened by the Clang | Disaster | You're deafened for 1 minute.
Momentum Betrayal | Disaster | You take one roll of your weapon's damage die and fall prone.
Ally Struck Hard | Catastrophe | An ally within 5 feet takes the attack's full damage, modifiers included, exactly as though you had hit them.
Weapon Shattered | Catastrophe | A non-magical weapon is destroyed outright. A magical weapon survives but is unusable until an hour's work with the right tools puts it back together.
Impaled Yourself | Catastrophe | You take double your weapon's damage die and are badly wounded: you have disadvantage on attack rolls until you regain any hit points.
Thrown Clear | Catastrophe | You're hurled 15 feet in a random direction, land prone, and take 1d6 bludgeoning damage.
Sightless | Catastrophe | You're blinded until you regain any hit points or an ally spends an action tending to your eyes.
Arm Broken | Catastrophe | You can't use that arm — and therefore any two-handed weapon — until a lesser restoration or a long rest with proper care.
Structural Collapse | Catastrophe | Your swing brings something down. Every creature within 5 feet, you included, must succeed on a DC 13 Dexterity saving throw or take 2d6 bludgeoning damage.
Attracted Attention | Catastrophe | The noise carries. A wandering monster or reinforcement of the DM's choice arrives in 1d4 rounds.
Enemy Freed | Catastrophe | If the target was grappled, restrained, or otherwise controlled by you or an ally, that control ends immediately.
Weapon Turned on You | Catastrophe | If the target has a free hand, it may use its reaction to make one attack against you using your own weapon.
Dropped in Enemy Hands | Catastrophe | Your weapon lands in a hostile creature's space. It may pick the weapon up as a free object interaction.
Concussed | Catastrophe | You're stunned until the end of your next turn, and you have disadvantage on Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma checks until you finish a long rest.
Friendly Fire, Badly | Catastrophe | Make the attack roll again against the ally nearest to you, using the same modifiers. On a hit, they take full damage.
Everything Falls | Catastrophe | You drop your weapon, your shield, and one other held item, each into a different space within 10 feet.
Out of the Fight | Catastrophe | You fall prone, drop your weapon, and your turn ends. You can't take reactions until the start of your next turn.
The Swing Heard Round the Dungeon | Legendary | Your weapon strikes something load-bearing. The room begins to come apart — the DM introduces a hazard or a countdown. You take 2d6 bludgeoning damage and fall prone.
Gone from the Scene | Legendary | Your weapon leaves your hand and the encounter entirely: down a chasm, into deep water, through a window, into the portal. Recovering it is a side quest, not an action. A magical weapon is always recoverable eventually — the DM decides how far you'll walk.
Entirely the Wrong Target | Legendary | The attack resolves in full against the ally nearest to you, as a critical hit. Roll the damage dice twice.
Spectacular Self-Defeat | Legendary | You knock yourself unconscious for 1 minute, or until you take damage or an ally uses an action to rouse you. You are not dying — you are simply, comprehensively out.
The One They'll Tell Stories About | Legendary | You end up disarmed and prone, with your weapon embedded somewhere absurd and highly visible. Every creature that can see you, friend and foe alike, has advantage on attack rolls against you until the start of your next turn. You take no damage. Your dignity takes all of it.
Questions
Do critical fumbles exist in 5e?
No. A natural 1 on an attack roll misses, and that is the whole rule. Fumble tables are a house rule, and a popular one — but nothing in the game requires them.
Should a natural 1 always miss?
Yes, on an attack roll — that part IS a rule. A table like this describes the miss; it does not change whether you hit.
Doesn't this punish martial characters?
It can. A fighter with three attacks rolls far more d20s than a wizard, so a per-roll fumble rule falls hardest on the people who attack most. Rolling only on a confirmed fumble evens it out considerably.
